5 Days East Africa Safari Background Information

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Bwindi is derived from the Runjakitara word “Mubwindi” meaning “a place full of darkness” and the name derives from the large bamboo groves scattered among the hardwoods of the larger forest. Bamboo and thick ground cover overgrown with ferns, vines, and other plants seriously impede direct foot access. The forest is located on the western edge of the Great Rift Valley, just a few kilometers from the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and about 25 kilometers (16 mi) north of the Virunga Mountains.

Forests are one of the most biologically diverse regions on Earth, and half of the world’s critically endangered mountain gorillas live in jungles, their natural habitat. The forest has been recognized as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization due to its biological importance. Researcher Craig Stanford, co-director of the park’s Jane Goodall Research Center, described the forest as “torn by contradictions and cut across historical, political, and biological boundaries.” In 1991, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park was established.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

located in southwestern Uganda. The park is part of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The park is located on the western edge of the Great Rift Valley, just a few kilometers from the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and about 25 kilometers (16 mi) north of the Virunga Mountains. It consists of 321 square kilometers (124 sq mi) of upland and lowland forest and is accessible only on foot.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has been designated a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization for its biological significance. Species diversity is an important feature of the park. It provides a habitat for 120 mammals, 348 birds, 220 butterflies, 27 frogs, chameleons, geckos, and many endangered species.

Botanically, the park is one of the most diverse forests in East Africa, with more than 1,000 species of flowering plants, including 163 species of trees and 104 species of ferns. The northern (low) area is rich in Guinea-Congo flora, including two endangered species, the brown mahogany, and the long-stemmed Brazoria. High endemic regional proportion, especially in the Albertine Rift.

The park is a haven for many birds, including colobus monkeys, chimpanzees and hornbills, and turacos. Most notable are the 400 Bwindi gorillas, half of the world’s endangered mountain gorillas. The rampant mountain gorilla population is open for tourism in four different districts of Kisoro, Bhuma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Kanungu, Kabale, and Nkulingo.

Maasai Mara National Reserve

This is a huge game reserve in the semi-arid Narok region of Kenya. It borders the Serengeti National Park in the Mara region of Tanzania. It is named after the Maasai people who are the ancestors of the area. Mara means maa found in the Maasai language.

The Maasai Mara is famous for its extensive wildebeest and wildebeest migration to and from the Serengeti each year during the dry season from July to October. This is often called the Great Migration. A visit to the reserve is an adventure in a cultural tour to one of the oldest inhabitants of East Africa, the Maasai.

This noble tribe is one of the few that has preserved most of its traditions. It features a traditional team of dancers who dance to the call of the song and the response of the dance, perhaps their most famous dance is the Big Wood Dance or rather the Leap Dance. You can join in the dance as these agile male dancers leap higher and higher to the beat of the captivating music.
